from what I remember, Edith tried to drop Mary in it after Mary had the Turk in her bedroom + he dropped dead.

Edith was mad jealous of Mary because although Mary was engaged to the rightful heir to Downton (who went down with the Titanic),...Edith was in love with him.

ael's remark about Edith being stood up at the altar has just rung a bell...shall have to look into that further when I've got time.

Isis has a secret" love puppy" that has contracted rabies after biting Richard E Grant. The puppy then bit the nasty Thomas Barrow and that explains the mysterious illness that Barrow might be suffering. (Can't be HIV because it is too early in time)
Going back to original post question I would like B.ates to give Barrow a good whack
