The Pride and the Passion was based on a book called "The Gun" by C.S.Forrester and based I Spain.

I think the film you are after may be "El Cid", which I believe takes place in Spain.

It must be more than 40 years since I saw this movie and my memory is suspect! You are all right - the action is in Spain during the Napoleonic era. I have checked on Wikipedia and the film is The Pride and the Passion. Which I will now try and purchase. Many thanks to all who took the time to answer.
