Looking forward to this and seeing the stage production again later in the year. How I love it when the house does its spectacular party piece on stage!
Fantastic. I didn't know the story, and was enthralled by it. I couldn't stop looking at Ken Stott - his nose, and his weight. He must have been wearing padded clothing surely. Brilliant acting all round.
// ...the inspector's last speech and the behaviour of the family couldn't but make me think of AB of late. //
well amid the wash of AB trivia there are such as BC ( Chris ) who come out with the Right Stuff
Clunky left wing propaganda - The whole rotten irredeemable family at the Big House ( = Capitalists ) combine to screw the workers ( = Eva Daisy etc ) successfully ( = she kills herself )
It is not even a tragedy - where the anti-hero has to be destroyed by his own defect of character. It is more like a Thos Hardy novel ( where a totally innocent good looker like Natassia Kinska gets screwed by an unstoppable march of bad luck )
If you look at the performance history - it is put on in Moscow first, with its admirable socialist principles ( how they must have laughed as they herded the real people into gulags ) as they cant find anywhere in London to put it on
I am not surprised
My own surprise is that kids do it for O level - presumably because proper stuff like Shakespeare is too hard
When people gather on here to rubbish the BBC, perhaps they should stop and think about dramas like this. This is exactly what the Beeb does so well.
All the previously argued leftie analysis is just tosh. The play exposed the hypocrisy of the moneyed classes, and why not ? Its as fresh today as it was over 50 years ago.
We have more to come next week, with "The Go Between" !
Good drama, well, acted and produced....whats not to like ?
