I've just watched the best thing I have seen on TV for many years (BBC2 9:00pm UK time), It made me cry, laugh and think throughout. acting, directing and photography - brilliant! If you have the means to watch it I recommend it without reservation.

Barsel, you should be able to watch on bbc iplayer either from the BBC web site or via the red button on your TV remote when tuned to a BBC channel.

I would love to watch it again but unfortunately I can only get BBC iPlayer for radio, not TV here. If when any of you that have seen it, care to return to this thread I would pleased to hear your thoughts. Count yourself lucky you have such a treat in store :0)

the BBC website for it http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06nsxn0 doesn't mention any repeats and searching elsewhere indicates that it's not repeated during the next couple of weeks

It was marvelous ! Unfortunately I fell asleep at about 22:05 ! But I shall watch the last bit on the iplayer later.

If the Beeb can produce drama of this calibre, why on earth do they not do it more often ? I am old enough to remember Play for Today, and others over the years. When did we last see a good Dickens drama on our screens ?

All this so-called reality TV pap is OK for those that have low expectations but we are not all brain dead !

This was like a breath of fresh air in a Saturday night of the usual low-grade rubbish.

Every now and then the Beeb gets debated here on AB and all sorts of nonsense comes out. But if last night was an example of TV at its best, than all I can say is thank God for the BBC !

There's a review here, unfortunately the reviewer has missed out the small, but marvellous performance of Edward Fox, (perhaps understandable in a short review with so many first class acts to report on). His polite, reverent monologue after the performance to Hopkins, with his realization of how mediocre and hum drum his life had been up to that point, brought on a tear I admit.

If you enjoyed the tv version of the play yesterday I would recommend the 1983 film version starring Tom Courtenay as the dresser and Albert Finney as sir.

Hopkins at his best. I thought that Ian McKellen spoke his lines a little too quickly. Had trouble catching up especially with his good Northern accent.I suppose having hearing difficuties don't help me. Worth seeing again though.
