I agree Ann!
I've recorded to watch later because the 'Rev' actor is in it...

I think its from a novel in the middle of a long saga. Its silly that we dont know what's gone on in the first few books before this. So hard to follow and disappointing - I was SO looking forward to it, having loved Downton by Julian Fellowes too.

Well I don't think I'll bother watching part 2 and 3 on the strength of tonight's first episode!

If Sir Roger is Mary's maternal uncle then surely her mother wouldn't have been a commoner.
well I thought it was a book by Trollope at the end of his eccliastical series

the political novels are getting an outing as the Pallisers ( or the Planty Pal show ) on day time teevee

but it is the latest from Joolz Fellowes and here boys and gurlz - is a who's who ...

You really need to have some knowledge of the Barsetshire Chronicals to follow it fully. That is why I was surprised, and said to Mr.J2, that Julian Fellowes chose it. Having said that, it can stand on its own, but you need to pay close attention.

IMO Fellowes has done a good job. Dr. Thorne is coming through as a real person instead of a sort off narrator, as the novel left me feeling.

Thoroughly enjoyable (but I had a bit of prior knowledge). Please stick with it you doubters. You will end up loving it, I (very-nearly) promise. :)
Sir Roger wasn't a Sir to start with .He was a stonemason.
It was only after he came out of prison after kiling Henry Thorne and started something to do with the railways he became rich and was given a title.
The Thornes first appeared in Barchester Towers.
It's very good so far ,but like the books loads of characters.
Thanks for explaining that Shaneystar. So, obviously prior knowledge is required to follow it.
Dr Thorne is Lance Corkoran and he's in The Night Manager. Does that help.
Sorry, couldn't resist!
I enjoyed it and didn't find it too hard to follow which is unusual for me.

Sounds as if prior knowledge of the story so far was needed before watching it. May just try it again next Sunday but not holding out much hope!l
I find it helpful to keep a cast list to hand. That way you can tie up husband and wife, parents etc.
I enjoyed it too netibiza.
I was confused at first but once I sorted out that Dr Thorne and Sir Roger were both uncles of the illegitimate girl I gleefully explained it all to Mrs retro who I then noticed was in a deep stupor. :-)Don't think she will be bothering with the next 2 but I enjoyed it.
