'The Magdalene Sisters', BBC2 11:50 pm. Whilst it is not based on a singke true story, it is said to accurately portray events which were commonplace in such institutions. For those who haven't seen it yet, it is a quite shocking film - the biggest shock, imho, coming in the end credits.
Our own experiences may differ, Tambo.......but the feelings I have now towards the Catholic Church are not based on my experiences......I was strong enough to dismiss those many years ago.
The abuse, brutality, cover ups, lies and pure evil of many of those preaching that faith are well publicised and those I can never dismiss.
I have to agree with Tamborine
I (probably) would not be here were it not for nuns and I adored the ones who taught me - but no one is going to make a film about that now are they
I was 'punished' by a nun in my Catholic primary school.
It would now be called sexual abuse.
For this and other memories, I too now despise the RC church.
How could anyone ever put a member of their family into a place like that - unless they were better off there away from the people who abused them at home.
Oh you didn't have to be abused at home, CatC.......you could be sent there for being seen holding hands with a lad who wasn't a Catholic for instance..... maybe for becoming pregnant out of marriage......the church could find many reasons to send a girl to provide cheap labour for the nuns.
Svejk - how dare you - if you are referring to me I WAS NOT born in the 50's
;-))
Actually in my case my relative was born out of wedlock in the 1920's - the nuns stood by the mother then and supported her throughout her pregnancy. But as I say - stories like hers aren't interesting enough to be made into films
My state school in Liverpool were cruel & racist as we lived in army transit nissan huts. Constant bullying from civvy kids was our lot. Ignorant lot werent aware our fathers were serving the country. Do I hate all Liverpudlians, ofcourse not.
Ric....it's not for interest that The Magdalene Sisters was made......if you listen now to the voices of women who were in those places it's something that needs to be told...... to deliver a baby...never see it.....never know whether it lived or was buried in a hole in the convent grounds....that is wrong.
Many experience bullying in childhood, Tambo.......to be beaten by nuns....have your hair shorn.....worked til you dropped or to be raped by a priest....now that is different.
I think the thing about Islam is that - like the Catholic church - the vast majority are normal individuals - its the very small minority that cause the problems
For the record I despise Islam as much as I despise Catholicism and I hold "peaceful" Muslims as responsible for evil as I do "peaceful" Catholics as any of the Catholics in my family would confirm.
And for the record I consider Svejk a complete numpty.
