What was the cause of the Beetle infestation?

The boy's mother thought she was the curse because as a child she had lied about the other woman and they had drowned her as a witch.. One of the peasants tried to drown the son but he was saved and they stopped the mother from killing herself. Cause of beetles I can't remember. Just a natural disaster I think. They made aomehing and set fire to it on the fields and it killed all the beetles so they had their harvest.
