What Is This Movie Called ?

I have a feeling I have asked this before but cannot remember the answer.

It takes place in Australia,scientists have somehow harnessed the Sun's energy & something goes horribly wrong. Most of Earth's life has been extinguished, except a very few people who struggle to survive. They manage to meet up & use anything to help them to live. A lot of the action I remember takes place in a large department store. The main male character loses his life trying to save the others when he fights a losing battle trying to turn off the solar link. Can anyone help please ?

Damn good film. Remember watching this on TV about 20 years ago. Really good concept, ahead of its time.
