/// Aaron Moffat-Jackman, a trainee vicar from Old Trafford, told the Manchester Evening News: 'What it did was trivialise a horrific traumatic time for many people. ///

/// 'Particularly at a time when things are ongoing in America, with many black people getting killed by police, by white people. I think it would be very welcome for ITV to apologise.' ///

'The episode on Bank Holiday Monday saw Eva Price, played by Catherine Tyldesley, visit Audrey's hair salon, where she remarked: 'I have more roots than Kunta Kinte.'

I must watch the 'highlights'...
I thought that people watched soaps as they were 'real life' well 'isms' are real and bad things are said in the real world.

Trainee vicar?
Crikey,what next?

Eastenders? I hope no storylines feature goods being sold on the 'black market'.
Unfortunate choice of phrase to give the character, sure it will blow over.
I think we can expect cut backs in the script writers pay packets!

I wonder if they'll go for a comb over of this incident?
Mamy - " Unfortunate choice of phrase to give the character, sure it will blow over. "

A blow over or a blow dry?

I don't think that is a phrase that will pop into mind when examining ones roots. It bemused me a bit, I don't think that it is racist or offensive but more pointless.

I am fat, Scottish, Mentally ill and a crazy cat lady - I have been known to laugh at jokes poking fun at the above, but only when they are actually funny and not demeaning.
I don't think there will be a PERManent effect ; )
I thought soaps were supposed to reflect real life? People are offensive in real life and make offensive comments. It shouldn't be sanitised to make the professionally offended happy.
You have to watch every word you say today A.O.G. someone will make an issue of it.
Kunta Kinte was character in Roots, and thus the quip has no racist overtones at all, it is merely fitting for the humorous result.
I don't have a problem with 'more roots than Kunta Kinte' - it is wordplay.

If she had said 'more bracelets than Kunta Kinte' I could understand the outcry
I thought that as Eva admitted she had no idea what the expression meant was showing that people use phrases like this without realising the implications.
I think it's a storm in a teacup.
For one I think we agree F.F.
Once
Maybe if enough outcry occurs the Coronation Street bosses will apologise for their inappropriate apology ?
They already have, OG
From AOG's link:

A spokeswoman for the soap said: 'We apologise if this dialogue has caused offence.'
ITV did indeed apologise for the dialogue used in the script, hc, but I read O_G's comment as saying ITV should now apologise for having apologised
You're right, FF
I am outraged at people getting outraged! I didnt even hear the comment and have no idea who kunta kinta was is or will be!
