I thought it was excellent. The vulnerability of Coltrane's character is emphasised by the emphysemic breathing on the soundtrack that is not there all the time, but drifts in and out.
The clever contrast between the public persona - jovial, family-friendly, and the private man - seedy, selfish, amoral, was wonderfully drawn.
It heads into the dilemma the writer is presenting for the viewer to consider - Coltrane's character is a deeply unpleasant individual, but does that mean he is guilty? As he said last night, he is innocent until proven guilty under the law, but of course, human nature and the law part company pretty rapidly in these circumstances.
So I think it is shaping up to be a wonderful drama - with stellar actors who know that TV is all about small facial nuances, not big speeches - I look forward to the drama unfolding.
