What happened to Max ?

He was cleared of murder and presume out of jail, and I read quite a while ago he was seeking revenge on Ian Beale.

They are never consistent with their storylines.

Storylines have to coincide with actors' contracts and availability.

It may be that the actor is not free to re-sign with the BBC yet and return, but no doubt he will in due course.
