I still use my maiden name for all financial affairs (reverted to it after divorce and it was my legal name in France - not a bad idea to keep your birth name for all legalities). You can be called what you want in this country, so married name for social - family name for legal/financial. It does cause a few problems here but HMRC and Nat. Ins. seem to be able to cope with it. So I consider her to be Katherine Middleton, married name Duchess of etc.. and would have accepted the answer.
With Royals, there are many names. Just because you do not have the current title should not matter.
In a popular quiz, as long as you have the right person, their title should not matter.
Lady Di would be an acceptable answer for Prince Harry's mother. So Kate Middleton should be acceptable for George's mum.

Lord Edward Cecil was an mousey author of Leisure of an Egyptian Official and when the Boer war broke out there was no money to pay the British Army ( hey but I am telling you the plaaaart !). So ma good lord went down to the Cairo branch of Barings and personally wrote out a personal cheque for one million pounds [ one hundred million smackers now ]
and Lord Baring said " My Lord how do I know that this cheque will be honoured by the British govt ? "
and Lord Edouard replied ( for it was he ) " because my father is prime minister "
Lord Saisbury didnt go around saying - "of course I am really Robert Gascoyne Cecil"
