Why on earth do loads of TV programmes have dogs barking in the background.
My dog goes berserk as I'm sure a lot of other people's dogs do. It's most annoying. What do there people think?

It's a device to remind you that you're watching the same old guff, just with different actors. Like the fox yelping in the night in Midsomer Murders.

I don't notice dogs barking but I do notice music.

That should have read 'What do other people think'

For added realism, I can here dogs barking as I'm typing, our two dogs are flaked out in front of the fire so it's not them. As far as I know the next nearest dogs are about 80-100 yards away.

Hear, not here ^^^^^ Good grief!!!!!!
I don't think I've ever noticed dogs barking in the background. Have you any examples?
I bet you don’t notice how many programs/ads have high pitched whistling in the sound track. My dogs know the difference between telly noise and real noise but a whistle makes them alert and will wake them from sleep. I guess its the same as the barking dogs, if you haven’t got a reason to notice then you don’t.
Whenever there is a night scene in every TV play you can be sure a dog will be barking. I've notice this for a long time.
Should be "noticed" not "notice".

My dog is a Border Collie (they have very acute hearing).
I've never noticed dogs barking on TV.
I'm looking after one for a couple of weeks, so I will note when dogs are barking on telly and see how things are.

His/her hearing can’t be that acute or they’d work out it was a recording and not real.
YES YES YES - the GTECH Airam advert - my dog barks and barks and barks at the telly before the dog even appears - drives us potty!!!!!
Yes, I've heard this in Corrie, it happens a lot in outdoor scenes.
An update to this thread.
I said I would report on how my 'foster' dog would react to other dogs barking on screen. She was sleeping quite soundly in front of the telly, but roused when she heard dogs barking in a (possibly bad) puppy farm on Watchdog.
