Just watching the recording from a couple of days ago. The man is a genius.
Just to have a drummer as backing him is incredible. He is truly an artist.

Just remembered I saw him in concert in Liverpool about 1960/1961.

He did a brilliant concert in Liverpool, at the end of it he said he didn't feel he had done his best and would be repeating the concert for those who would stay and watch it. We did and enjoyed it as much as the original show.

Back in the 60s I had a boyfriend that looked just like him. Walking around London, people would stop and look and some asked for his autograph. This thread just jogged my memory!

SD is one of a group of artists / musicians / entertainers that I simply don't connect with.

Like his idoliser Bruce Forsyth, he sings, dances, talks, and all that, but does none of those things especially well, compared with the acknowledged experts in the respective fields.

I know he has a huge reputation, he simply doesn't move me at all.

The other issue I always had with him was the way he allowed himself to be ritually humiliated by the racist thug bullies he hung out with in The Rat Pack.

Even allowing for the social climate of the time, for a proudly Jewish black man to put himself in the way of such debasement for the entertainment of rich white audiences was well beneath an artist who could easily out-dance and in my view, out-sing any of them - including the over-rated Sinatra.

They are a wee bit before my time, but if I ever heard FS singing The Summer Wind, I used to get goosebumps, really love that song.

To those who point out that my posts appear contradictory, I am happy to explain -

My view that Sammy Davies is not a particular good singer or dancer is entirely my personal view, and millions would disagree with it.

Given that he was a singularly successful and popular entertainer - that leads me to my point about the way he allowed himself to be debased by people who could not viewed to be as talented as he was viewed - my personal opinion notwithstanding.
