I've really enjoyed Garden State recently, and American Beauty is one of my favourite films of all time. Are there any other similar bittersweet films out there about the human condition that someone can recommend. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind has already been suggested to me, and I'll be picking it up soon.

Rushmore

Lost in Translation - didn't think this was as fantastic as everyone else but still a nice, enjoyable film.

Happiness - I have heard American Beauty called 'Happiness Lite'.

Wilbur (Wants to Kill Himself) - a life-affirming film about suicide anyone?  And British for a change.

I agree with Shipstabber about Rushmore.  You may also like The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic by the same director (Wes Anderson).

Also The Fisher King (Terry Gilliam) springs to mind, and Magnolia (Paul Thomas Anderson), or Shortcuts (Robert Altman).

Requiem for a dream.

House of Sand and Fog

Salaam Bombay

Rushmore was very good, as were the Royal Tenenbaums and Requiem for a dream. Those were definitely on the right track. I'll check out Happiness and the others. Cheers!
Many films by Alan Rudolph, in particular "Trouble In Mind" with Kris Kristofferson and Keith Carradine

You may also want to take a look at Bill Murray's new film - Broken Flowers (see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0412019/)

...or practically anything directed by Cameron Crowe.
