Anyone remember this film/tv prog?

I watched this film years ago...Possibly as far back as 1986 or thereabouts. It was an American film about 'if i remember correctly, a lady who moves in with her new partner and she ends up murdering him and the kids with an icepick. In the end she gets caught and sentenced to life in prison. It was based on a true story i think and was quite a good brutal thriller. Any ideas what the name of it was?
