most dvd players can be turned into multi -regional ones by going to "dvd reviewer" on the net, they carry all known makes of machine and the engineer's code;which when set from your remote control; will allow the playing of dvds from any region.
There are quite a few Australian R4 DVD's which are R2 (UK) compatible. I purchase quite a few of my films from Australian sites (http://www.ezydvd.com.au , http://www.DeVoteD.com.au , http://www.dvdcrave.com.au) because they are usually cheaper and are released sooner. A good example of this is the new Back to the Future Trilogy which has just been released on R4. First off it isn't released on R2 until December, secondly it's going to cost about 28 on R2. I got mine from CD-Wow.net (http://www.cd-wow.net/detail_results_2.php?product
_code=2375)
for only 17.99. You may find only a few Australian sites list whether the discs are R2 compatible or not but you can check the majority by going to http://www.michaeldvd.com.au. This guy has tons of reviews of R4 discs and he lists the Region compatibility. Hope this helps.
