The River (strangly enough!!!!!) It only ran for 6 episodes back in 1989 but I thought it was kinda good!

He didn't actually live on a boat. Despite the programme's name, he played a canal lockkeeper, and lived next to the canal in the lockkeeper's cottage. And it did deserve a second series!
