My argument was that one of Bond's defining characteristics is his cruel/chauvanistic/misogynistic use of women, and therefore should be male. I also felt that as a product of his time (the cold war) and being based on a pre-existing literary character he is probably best as a white guy (though I do think Colin Salmon could have made a good Bond). It's a bit like Shaft - he just is a cool black dude. (Not to mention the cat that won't cop out when there's danger all about.)
There have been female bond clones (Modesty Blaise) but they haven't caught the public's imagination, so I guess that the viewers aren't keen on a female Bond either.
Dr Who, on the other hand, could easily be any sex, race or even (intelligent) species.
I suppose Lara Croft is a little like Bond... just a different set of circumstances - though a lot more physical than Roger Moore, LOL!
I think it could be worth a try - especially nowadays, when a woman can behave as Bond does and not be frowned upon, like she would have been in the past.
Personally, I would love to see a strong woman treating men the way Bond treats women.
