Why Are The Actors Leaving Corrie?

For sometime now, viewers of Coronation Street have been complaining about the story lines.David and Max's Dad, (can't remember his name)Todd and the vicar, Phelan with the rape and murders, Bethany etc, and now the 2 girls playing lesbians. Next Year they are telling the story of male rape which involves one of the main characters.I read today that 5 actors are leaving Corrie now and in the New Year and I wouldn't be surprised if there will be more.Do you think they are leaving because of the story lines or is it just a coincidence?

Actually Darcey I have passed that up, it's not the kind of thing that I want to be in and long term will not do my career any good at all. Any idiot can get on telly doing something,anything, but being famous and being an actor are not the same thing, and I prefer to act to being well known. There are lots of actors who aspire to be in soaps, and that's fine if that's what they want, but they then are unlikely to end up at the RSC or doing much serious work, simply because the public associate them with a role. Someone made a good point about William Roache. If he was cast as something serious in a major TV or film production the first thing that would happen however good he was is people would go 'Oh look! Ken Barlow!' and be unable to disassociate themselves from that well known character, so casting directors won't generally cast well known Soap actors in other serious things ( for the most part there are exceptions like Suranne Jones, but her main body of work is still TV series and TV films, although she does do odd stage work). It's just the way it is, so you make a choice, and my choice has been to ask my agent not to put me up for Soaps as it will damage my long term career, and given my particular skill set and look ( I have a 'period face') she agrees it would only hinder me.

Lots of famous people have appeared in Corrie after they became well known -Sir Ian McKellen, Bradley Walsh, Craig Charles, Keith Barron, Amanda Barrie, Stephanie Beecham, Anthony Booth, Stephanie Cole, Robert Vaughn, Andrew Sachs, NIgel Havers, Derek Griffiths.......

The actors in Corrie have always come and gone and they often come back ! I still love it, but it does get on my nerves sometimes and I'm really sorry that Todd is leaving, the idiot ! Wonder what will happen to poor Summer ...

Actors as a breed don't like to stay in one place for too long, so really long-standing characters are the exception.

If a character is popular, he or she may be written out so the player can do theatre, or simply have a break as I believe Alison King has done, and then come back.

If the actor is a problem, or the character has run its course, they may be 'killed off'.

These are the occupational hazards of the actor's life, but they accept them because no-one acts because they want security, they act because they will be utterly miserable doing anything else.

Kvalidir, I'm so glad you have found your niche in life, many actors find soaps their niche.

Your post came across as a little condescending to soap actors, to me anyway.

Darcey, you really do have that wrong! Kvalidir im sure have great admiration for anybody following their chosen path, just because she aspires to something different does not mean that she looks down on others following a different path, she really is not like that, I'm sure!

Absolutely, I do want to clarify that, soap actors work really, really hard and I am friendly with quite a few, there is nothing wrong with what they do, it's proper acting, it's not a snob thing it's just a practical thing, that it makes the sort of work that I want to do that much more difficult to get if I did a soap, which is sad but true :(

I find some of the scenes very uncomfortable viewing eg the vicar and Todd in bed - the girls snogging half naked in the back of the van and before anyone accuses me of being anti gay I certainly am not and don't like seeing gratuitous sex scenes in heterosexual couples either and I felt neither scene added anything to the storylines. Whatever happened to using your imagination and I dread to think what parents are having to explain to their young children as I certainly watched it with my mum as a youngster. Corrie used to be about the everyday goings on in a northern estate - some of these stories are about as far removed from reality as gritty northern men drinking wine in most of the soaps these days!
