one girl left £5k against the beast, he let her name her own offer, she asked for £100k, he gave it, she took the 5 instead, then romped home with £5k. Then got 17 in the final chase and the beast failed to catch. She just wasted £95k. Why (x1000) would you ask for £100k and not take it? Unbelievable!

Agreed, just couldn't fathom the thinking behind it.
Didn't see it tonight. How much did the team actually win?
I felt sorry for her not taking the high offer as she was a smart cookie, and the last player standing against Mark is a tough call for anyone... I'd put money on the Beast over any contestant.
Was she to only one left then?

Yes she was, and threw away £95K

Tora, your post doesn't make it clear that she was the 'last man' standing. Never mind, I get it now.
Thank you, Baldric.

"one girl left £5k against the beast" - ???
A comma would have helped.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

not really andy, £95k for one step on the board?
I'd have had a go at the £100k myself - you have little to lose if you're the only one left. But, be fair, she left with what she had come for - a good holiday for herself and parents. Good for her.
(By the way, I was a bit concerned that she passed on an easy sums one, think it was 62 x 2, considering she is a teaching assistant!)

Now why doesn't that surprise me.
It was in some ways a silly decision although understandable. If she'd gone for 100k and lost on the board she would still have been able to the chase for a £1000 as the last player standing.
I'm not sure, ladyb. Younger daughter is a T.A. and very literate and numerate. (Degree in Eng. and specialising in maths and music - complicated. Circumstances dictate the T.A. job & she's thinking of going for teaching.)
Perhaps you, like me, reach back to days when T.As. weren't expected to take classes if there were need and they were lovely ladies (mostly) who supported pupils by organising them - and keeping spare underpants etc..
To be fair to the Lady she did come up with answers to a few novels that I've never read but the mathematics question did give one a little chortle.
