I think we may learn more about this bizarre series of events. The courts and newspapers were still remarkably deferential, at the time, and old allegiances will not hold in the same way. I will be watching with great interest.

I was at school at the time so I wouldn't have usually taken much notice but he was our local MP so there was lots of coverage on local TV. I used to see him in town with his second wife (Marion, I think) The local hospital has a ward named after his first wife who died in a car crash. He had a bit of a tragic life by all accounts
Historically it's interesting to see just how much power and influence The Establishment had in those days, over the press particularly.
It was simply not thought possible that someone like Thorpe could be a liar, and worse, a homosexual, and a lot of chicanery went on behind the scenes to protect the guilty.
It was of its time, both in terms of the scandal caused, and the way in which it was dealt with, and reported, and younger viewers will be amazed at what 'went on' back then. For us who were there, it was simply normal life.
