Secret Lives Of Farm Animals
72 Answers
Just seen last night's episode of the Secret Life of Farm Animals. Amazing, incredible, see it on catch-up if you missed it (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0001jgg).
I've always liked cows, but had no idea that they organised their own creches (when left alone to do so), or that they liked music!
My only real question is: "How, having seen programmes like this, can people STILL eat animals, knowing that they are sensitive, caring, sentient beings - and not, as most meat-eaters would like to believe, just a special sort of plant that moves around?"

Most of my reply was cut !? Odd.
Soon we all might have to eat something like Quorn, made from a fungus, and I thought tofu was disgusting. Soylent Green isn't far away.
Vegans are neo-fascists, they want to dictate what you say, think, do, & eat:

AZardoz. Why so belligerent? Too much meat?
What I’m asking for is a civilised debate on the slaughter and eating of sentient beings. What I GET is bluster and insults. Why?
My suspicions are that meat-eaters (like you) are totally unwilling to engage in serious debate because deep down you have your doubts about your way of life.

bainbrig you are never going to get anyone to debate with you because if anyone disagrees with you, you accuse them of either wanting a 'fight' or insulting you.
Like most vegetarians and vegans you are quick to condone, criticise, and berate meat eaters, yet become defensive when they reciprocate.
I guess most meat eaters would not eat a steak if they followed it from farm to fork. The slaughtering process is horrendous. One cannot debate this as its a fact. We are animals and some like to eat the flesh of animals some refrain for various reasons. Until Humankind evolve further this is going to be how it is. Right or Wrong.

Rubbish. Read what I wrote about Geezer’s comments. Nothing about fighting or insulting, because Geezer has understood my question and countered it. That is what debate is about.
I say again. Geezer imples that animals are there to be eaten because they are inherently inferior.
Is that YOUR stance? At least I know where Geezer stands.

bainbrig -I'll try again you are hard work
//My only real question is: "How, having seen programmes like this, can people STILL eat animals, knowing that they are sensitive, caring, sentient beings//
Because most people, I guess, realise in the back of their mind it is wrong, but like the taste, and can disengage from the fact the meat they see on their plate is dead flesh from an animal that gives birth and suckles their offspring the same as we do ( mammals obviously)
//- and not, as most meat-eaters would like to believe, just a special sort of plant that moves around?" //
You are merely presuming what 'most meat eaters' would like to believe. I struggle to comprehend that any intelligent person would think an animal was a sort of plant that moves around. What I would hope is they make informed choices about where their food comes from and how its been treated before slaughter. Unfortunately this privilege is often only given to those who can afford to choose, and for many a full stomach on factory farmed meat is the only way to feed their family.
On a personal level I occasionally eat red meat from a farm I know where its been reared and is slaughtered on the premises. Same with pork and lamb. I would rather starve than eat a factory farmed chicken or egg, though I don't need to buy eggs as I have some lovely free range hens that have acres of land and a wood to roam in and lay me an egg each every day.
I love vegetarian food and will probably one day just sop eating meat altogether but would never criticize those who decide on an omnivorous lifestyle.

I would like to know where all of the answerers stand on this point.
Geezer has made his position clear. Animals, he believes, are our inferiors, and therefore we have a right to slaughter and eat them.
Is this your opinion, Lydia?
Is this your opinion, rockrose?
etc.
You know MY opinion. Why can't I know yours?
Or, why can't/won't you answer a simple question?

I've been to an abattoir, seen animals slaughtered and still eat meat. So do the men and women who work there that I chatted to as does my farmer butcher and his family.
I happily eat vegetarian meals but the majority of my evening meals are meat or fish based because I just love eating it.
There is nothing natural about the process of making quorn.

yes animals are our inferiors , we are at the top of the food chain. We are intellectually superior to them.
Yes we have a right to slaughter or hunt and kill them for food just as they have a right to attack and kill us. We also have the responsibility to ensure that they are looked after to the best of or abilities while they are alive.
With superiority comes responsibility.

BB it's not a question of people thinking they have the "right" to eat animals, it is the way we have evolved into the omnivores we are. Almost nothing in the animal kingdom dies of old age, they get eaten, sentient or not. That's the food chain. Humans have created mechanised intensive non natural methods of production and slaughter I grant you but that does not take away the natural food chain mechanics. Would it somehow be ok if we all hunted our own food with spears for example? would that sit better with you? After all carrion is, like it or not, a natural part of our diet.
