I can't think that teaching tolerance and respect to children and young people can be delivered by an adult standing at the front of the class with a firearm on their hip.

Valuable time would be lost locating and extracting a concealed weapon, one good reason why armed police officers have their guns on show and accessible at all times.
Why encourage a maniac to attack a class apparently unprotected by an armed teacher, who then has freedom to kill at will while sir or miss locates their gun and summons up the requisite adrenalin to aim and fire it?
I am of course playing devil's advocate here, I do not for one moment intend to defend the finer points of procedure in the concept of a teacher carrying a gun in a classroom.

Sorry you are not entirely correct. Believe me I had to do the 3 week body guard course (armed). Those in uniform had their tunics adapted to have velcro opening with mock buttons. Officers in plain clothes ( Royalty Protection and
Special Branch officers drew their weapons the same way from a concealed under coat position. That included the H&K MP5 Kurtz (short) carbine which was concealed and bought up to aim just as quickly.
The reason specialist officers carry overtly was because of the body armour and other accoutrements of their specialist operations. The tunic has all but gone these days.
The bodyguard training course was formulated by our friends in Bradbury Lines Hereford and they laughed at our 5 shot then 6 shot revolvers. 'Tart's Handbag Guns' We later got Glocks. No need for a teacher to overtly carry a handgun. They use a pancake holster .
