I don't think it needs criticising, it's a natural reaction. But it'd be nice to see older folk on being asked a youth interest question, saying, "It's after my time".
Personally I find it inexplicable how many folk clutter up their limited memory by holding load of "useless" knowledge, and as a result are good at quizzes. My brain goes a bit far the other way and tends to filter out and drop the non-useful stuff, perhaps a bit earlier than it should.

That part, yes but only if it was a conscious attempt on the individual's part. Not if it's not deliberate. Opting to deliberately try to memorize something is different from not making a deliberate effort.
Learning something and letting the subconscious mind decide what to keep and what to drop results in a lot of stuff being dropped by my brain, whilst others seem to default to store and retain much of it.
