Laughed out loud tonight when the contestant said, I wasn’t born in 1977. Jeremy said, “I wasn’t born on 1066 but I know what happened then.” :))

It is a humorous comment and one that crops up regularly- I think it depends oon whether the question is on popular culture of a certain age or history.

My Daughters would know nothing about some of the pop and film stars of my youth but they'd know more about the Ancient Egyptians, Battles and Kings and Queens.

The daft thing was, he actually said he’d seen the film, Frost/Nixon!!! :-0
Me too Chrissa, not a fan of JC but warming to him after tonight
Can't bare him - I did try and give him a go - but no no no ie Jeremy Clarkson. Looking back on Chris - there will be no comparison.

jj - :))
JJ - Can't 'bare him'???????????????

I should hope not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Clarkson (like Trump) is someone I'd definitely not like to see 'bare'
Great comment. Something you always want to say, these contestants coming on saying History, Science, Geography etc not my thing, I wasn’t born when Hitler was about but I know about things about him!

She'll need to be busy or marry an rich, old client.
I gave up half way through. I despair someone not knowing that the Davis Cup is for tennis & about the sinking of the Lusitania.
I have never liked Clarkson but much prefer the new format of the show - Tarrant used to prolong the answer time, encouraging the contestant to take his or her time, with much dithering.

I don't suppose that is Clarkson's doing, more likely to be the producers decision to tweak the format.
davebro, why should I know about tennis and the Davis Cup? All I know about tennis is that Wimbledon is held every year and everyone eats strawberries.
I have always skipped the sports pages in the newspapers and ignore it on the tv.
hc, you should know about it if you apply to go on a national television general knowledge quiz show
I didn't see it... but obviously older history can be better well-known because parts of it are exceptional and are taught. More modern things often do rely on experience, interest etc.
//why should I know about tennis and the Davis Cup?//
you must have been on a different planet when GB won it :-)
Has anyone else noticed that the youngsters on UC are sometimes clueless when it comes to English/British history.
Most of us, I'd imagine can place a King/Queen/Battle to within a hundred years or less.
I've seen some of them being 3/4/5 hundred years out. I suspect history, rightly or wrongly, is being taught in a different way.
It is, Spicerack. It started when I was still at school. Instead of learning facts and dates, we were taught about primary and secondary sources and how to interpret them. My history knowledge is next to nothing.
Alas, no UC tonight - dumped for boring athletics
Jeremy is very witty, with a dry sense of humour. He always makes me laugh. I must admit, I didn't want to watch new series, when I knew it was him hosting it. I grew very quickly to warm to him.
I really enjoyed it last night.
