The cast's contracts guarantee them a set number of appearances over a set time, and outside those times they are allowed to take on other work, subject to Granada's approval.
Cast members are not allowed to radically alter their appearance, unless for example the storyline dictates that the character has been on holiday, in which case a sun tan is OK, but changing of hair colour and style, addition of loss of facial hair, weight gain or loss, and so on, are all forbidden.
Older AB'ers may remember Lynn Perrie who played Ivy Tildsley hastening her exit after notable lip enhancement surgery during time away from the Street.

hereIam - // a_h I remember those lips and how ridiculous they looked !! //
A 'source' at the time advised me that Ms. Perrie was already heading for the exit because of continually appearing on set 'tired and emotional', as well as being difficult with other cast members. The addition of a couple of li-los to her face allowed the execs the reason they needed to give her the chop.

derek-33. It used to be filmed at the Granada studios in Manchester but then it moved to Media City which is classed as Salford. Weatherfield is, of course, a fictitious place in Salford, but as Salford is right next to Manchester, the accents are the same and the only people I know who say, ^ Eeeee, bin lak that sin Ena supped milk stout in t'snug. :-) ^ come from Yorkshire and I wondered if douglas9401 knew that. :-) x
derek-33 Must admit I've never sat outside the studios waiting to catch a glimpse, but when I used to shop at Sainsbury's in Altrincham years ago, I used to see many of the cast. I've even seen Audrey (Sue Nicholls) in Matalan and with her husband in DFS. The one I see quite often now is Kevin Webster ( Michael Le Vell ) in Tesco.
