Is it fair to those who do not have any interest in sport for both the ITV and the BBC to broadcast these events on their main channels at peak viewing time?

ANOTHEOLDGIT which programmes are you missing out on because of the sports?
Gromit, If the sport was on another of the ITV channels, they would still get the viewers and the money from advertising.
I am a big fan of Corrie and never miss an episode (it is so easy to record them) but I don't begrudge sport being shown in its place now and again. I won't miss an episode, they'll just show it a later date. No biggie.
It's a biggie for me hc as there is absolutely nothing on the other channels I'm interested in watching for 3 hours.

BBC1 and ITV1 are the flagship stations for their respective broadcasters. So they want to attract the most viewers to those channels. The channels’ success (or failure) is gauged by the number of viewers they attract. So they will want to broadcast a highly viewed Sporting match than a small rated show like Holby City. Niche programmes should be on the niche channels, not the ones that are most popular.
Its a none starter to please all. I see TV as just an advertising box in the corner of the room. If I do watch a program, lets say an half hour one. 10 mins of that half hour is given over to adds. If you like sport that's ok by me. The only time I watch sport, is world cup football, other than that don't watch football any other time.
I understand what you are saying Gromit, but why can't they put the cancelled programmes on another channel? If they were to show Corrie on one of the other ITV channels, it wouldn't bother me, but I do object to them not showing it at all for a week.
Next week Coronation Street will be aired on all 7 nights. Same for Emmerdale. That’s 14 episodes of Soaps at Primetime.
Then people moan about an England qualifier that will be on for a couple of hours.
teacake44. When Corrie is on at 7.30 pm and 8.30 pm, I record both episodes and then start watching the first one at 8.30 pm. That way I can skip through all the ads and cut a good 20 mins off. In fact, I do this with most of the channels that show adverts.
there you go barsel, a soap binge heading your way!
Barsel, my sister used to watch the Corrie omnibus, with a week's worth of episodes. I don't know if that's still going.

Advertising rates for ITV2 are far lower than the main channel. So ITV will lose money broadcasting an episode on there exclusively. They will show the missed episodes next week on the main ITV1 channel and earn the maximum money they can from it.
Gromit you're missing the point. If they put Emmerdale and Corrie etc on one of the other channels, they wouldn't have to show it for 7 consecutive nights. If someone likes the soaps and sports, most people can record the soaps if they want to watch the sport then watch the soaps later or the next day. By taking it off altogether, we can't do that.
looks like the national grid will take a battering too gromit! End of corrie = a gazillion kettles being put on!

BBC and ITV have somewhat different roles. BBC is supposed to inform, educate and entertain, whereas ITV would argue it also has to make a profit through advertising. Showing the home nations in the rugby world cup probably guarantees a decent audience on the main ITV channel, whereas Fiji - Uruguay is less of a pull, but ITV is contractually obliged to show all games, hence it was on ITV4.

" - no it is you missing the point, they wont want to put a mass audience show on ITV4 because they can only charge a fraction for the advertising. Thus they save them up and show them all on ITV1 and charge full wack for advertising. if they did what you suggested they'd be losing a fortune. (£100k for 30 seconds)
Barsel, no recordings to watch? I’m watching A Confession which I recorded.
It rarely bothers me, I can always find something to watch or dip into my packed recording library.
hc I don't think I have any recordings to watch, probably have films I haven't watched yet but aog asked should the Bbc and ITV use other channels and I said yes, but as TTT has pointed out to me, they would lose money by doing this, so it's not going to happen is it? I'm just peeved that they can just change our regular viewing choices to show football. PS you can probably tell, I don't like football.:-) x
get sky+ barsel, then you set everything you want to record then watch off the list when you want to. I rarely watch anything at the time it's actually on these days. It also means you can zip through the ads. You basically create your own channel with all the stuff you like on it.
