I think it is because if it was sunk then Germans wouldn't know which ship had gone down.
It is my understanding that the name is obscured on the hats only when they are on shore, for security reasons.
As soon as they embark, then the name of the ship is displayed, by moving the fabric on the cap around.

that would make sense, but the Germans on the Graf Spee i believe did know which ships were chasing them i believe, so wasn't sure why they had no cap ID to which ship. The only way we knew it was HMS Exeter was because the young blokes dad, Sean Bean, broke down when he heard on the radio that it was the Exeter that had been hit.
Question Author
sqad, if you watch the programme the caps name are obscured when on the ship, which i thought strange,
OK emmie then we must wait for more informed answers.
Question Author
that's ok sqad, someone will know i hope. Meanwhile i don't know whether to persevere with it, some bits are quite good, but the young bloke is wooden like a plank.

"Sailors’ hat ribbons during the World Wars

During both World Wars, various security measures were in force concerning cap ribbons and the need to keep the whereabouts of HM ships secret. In December 1914, an order was issued prohibiting the wearing of cap ribbons ashore, and in June 1915 men on leave from battleships, battlecruisers, cruisers and light cruisers were ordered to wear cap ribbons of their depot and not of their ships. During the Second World War, cap ribbons bearing only the letters 'HMS' or 'HM Destroyers/Submarines' were in use."

Question Author
i will theland, i was wondering if should open out the CB GMEB thread.
Who was the woman that was executed and dropped the brooch. ?
For security reasons emmie. If ratings are travelling back to their ship from leave (London to Liverpool via train for example) it would give information to Nazi spies/5th columnists etc the disposition of the Naval Fleet and the likelihood of a future sailing.
The jewish mother of the nurse who is working with Dr Webster.
Thank you .
