was anyone else dissapointed with this?,seemed to me as if lots of the film had been left on the cutting room floor,as though ther,d been problems in the making;scenesjumping from one to the next, and the ending not dramatic at all;a let down.

Certainly not an original take on the story was it ?. Apart from an advance in special effects there was little else to stand it up against the original, which i think now i actually prefer

So yes a big let down which i had been looking forward too for months

when was the book set? late 19th century? read it such a long time ago now . . .

I found it disapointing - very lame for a Spielberg film, and the hype for the DVD - "the greatest action adventure of all time ..." should be deleted under the Trades Description Act!
Agree with all the above here, watched it on saturday was really disappointed I had'nt seen the original but I believed all the hype and it was a real let down , I remember some of my friends saying it was good when they went to the cinema but I suppose you could get carried away with the big screen and the surround sound.

Hollywood has a knack for screwing up great stories; The War Of The Worlds this year and Troy, last. I wish Hollywood would start rating script writers more highly and stop relying on sheer spectacle and cgi.

Yup, disappointing. I did enjoy it in the sense of 'something mindless to watch after a hard week at work' affair. What got to me was the prologue narrative being dumbed down. The original was perfect in every way!

If only there were tickets left for Jeff Wayne's musical version live.... I'd be a happy man then.

It suffers because the ending of the book doesn't lend itself to a big Hollywood ending. SPOILER SPOILER

What are you going to do to dramatise them all suddenly dying from viruses with no explosions and jet fighters etc. Also if you make something so all powerful as they made the invaders it becomes increasingly unbelievable that anything could stop them so you disengage with the film

how did they get a virus tho? they are ********* i n there machines that not even a missile could penetrate let alone bird flu!!

Special effects were good but i find that the story had potential and was too tied up in keeping with the original that it struggled to deviate into a superior remake.

Think it would have been much better to really get away from the original even if to have a different ending to it As far as i found the ending just happened!! we barely got into the shock part of what the machines were doing and how scary this really was than suddenly....oh they are dead now!

Started quickly and well, ended too quick and poorly in my opinion.

I couldn't be bothered to watch it, full of special effects , a wooden star and big bangs.
Old hollywood made better films than today. The wife watched it, then went up stairs with a blank look on her face....that says it all!
The only thing that kept me awake during this film was the lovely Tom Cruise!!!
Big let down for a speilberg film, too rushed, more time could have been given to it....a big let down after waiting for a while to see it
Do not think i will be watching this film after reading what you all wrote about it.Does not sound too good a film does it.
Question Author
thanks to all who replied to my question-we all seemed to agree-wasn,t like a speilberg film at all.
great first hour... but some really poor bits... driving the van through the handy path through the plane crash.. and the end was awful.
