More Black People On British Television

Am I alone in noticing that since the awful George Floyd death in the USA and the consequent rise of the BLM movement, there’s been a big increase in black people on British television? Shouldn’t presenters, experts etc be chosen for their ability / talent rather than anything else?

Yes I believe there has been an increase ,whether that's to balance out I don't know but if those people are best for the job then I'm not bothered

I've not noticed. It's only been 2 months since Floyd's death. I doubt all the tv outlets have scrambled looking for people of colour...while booting others out.

Highly unlikely anything has changed overall.

To be honest I dont care if they can do the job and I suspect most people are the same. For instance on Sky News I'd far rather listen to Gillian or Gamal then Kay or that Scottish fella. They are more articulate and pleasant to listen to.

I’ve noticed there are more black and mixed-race people in adverts on tv, but it was so before the horrible George Floyd case.

If you want an example of the much discussed "White privilege" read theblip's OP again. The assumption that BAME folk have been hired to fill quotas, rather than because of their ability or job knowledge is a prime example.

I agree with Cloverjo, definitely more people of colour in adverts these days - gradually taking over from the gingers that seemed to abound. I suspect the advertising agencies feel they have got to get on the bandwagon and be seen to be inclusive. But at what point does the pendulum swing the other way and the whites are in a minority? Would it make any difference to the sale of the products being advertised?

Advertising is very simple though they don't always get it right - you want to get your product to appeal to the widest possible range of people in society.

maybe trying to appeal to city folk, diversity and all that.
as for adverts mmm havent seen any burka clad women
advertising lady products, but then again..could be a man under
that tent, now they should show them, in the name of diversity
but they don't..yet, but credit due to showing integration with
mixed race couples..
