I have to admit to having never even see several of those placed in the top ten!

1. Sherlock – 57%
2. Hercule Poirot – 9%
3. Line of Duty’s AC-12 – 9%
4. DCI Tom Barnaby from Midsomer Murders – 7%
5. Columbo – 5%
6. Miss Marple – 5%
7. Luther – 4%
8. Broadchurch’s Ellie Miller – 2%
9. Olivia Benson from Law and Order: SVU – 1%
10. Marcella – 1%

At least my own favourite made second place though ;-)
Not heard of some of them - but no-one asked me. Who do they ask for these polls?
//It’s official: Sherlock Holmes is Britain’s favourite television detective, according to a new RadioTimes.com poll that attracted thousands of votes.//
Have to agree with number one but only if played by Jeremy Brett.
>>> Who do they ask for these polls?

My list above is from the Radio Times poll but a bit of googling suggests that ITV conducted their own poll for the TV programme by directing Twitter users towards the SurveyGizmo website, where they could vote. 50 possible names (or partnerships, including Regan and Carter) were offered to viewers, who had to then drag-&-drop them into their preferred orders:

Just an excuse to show repeats all last week, cheap TV.
I agree with the modern day Sherlock. Absolutely brilliant. Next would be Line of Duty and Prime Suspect.
Morse and Frost didn't even make the list?

Poirot, as played by David Suchet was superb. As for Miss Marple, depends on the actress. Joan Hickson was tops followed by Geraldine McEwan. Julia McKenzie was dire.
No love for The Scooby Gang :-(

In honesty, there was never going to be any other winner than Sherlock Holmes was there?
My top two would be Sherlock Holmes as played by Jeremy Brett (nobody else!), and Jane Marple played by Joan Hickson (nobody else!).
I know this was a TV poll, but the greatest versions of Holmes and Marple are cinematic, in the shae of Basil Rathbone and Magaret Rutherford.
Holmes, of course, quite elementary, actually.
Agatha Christie was horrified when she saw Margaret Rutherford. She was nothing like Christie portrayed her. Those films were made mainly for laughs.
I grew up watching them JD, so I'm admittedly biased, plus she was just like my Nana, so I'm even more biased.
Van Der Falk was a favourite of mine, back in the 70s.
Has there ever been a movie or a series made in the UK based on Ian Rankin's character Rebus?
Van der Valk!
San!ac, I believe there was a series starring Ken Stott in the title role.
John Hannah played Rebus first then Ken Stott.
Yes, Several series of Rebus has been made, starring John Hannah in the first four then the fantastic Ken Stott. Currently being repeated.
