My sister recommended this series on Netflix. When she told me the subject was about chess, I felt put off. She told me not to be put off by this, and assured me I'd like it. Well, watched two episodes last night, and I'm really into it. My husband too. Has anyone here watched it?

spoilers so I wont paste and recycle

remember it is a drama - but all the games are pukka

I found all the mimetic crap difficult - suspension of disbelief, fourth wall etc
you never clean a black board rubber inside too much dust and that is just one ....

very good - about as true to fact as Shakespeares Henry VIII was to the real thing !
Yes, I thought it was very good. Visually stunning, and I particularly love the attention to detail in the board positions themselves -- all of the games you can see are based on real games with some delightfully artistic finishes.
Superb. We binge watched it and loved it.
Yes. As soon as I watched it I phoned my son.

My son learnt how to play chess when he was 8. He learnt it within a week and within a month he could beat his dad, who taught him! Quite funny.
Question Author
Wow, your son took to it very young, ummmm. Clever boy!
I've never learned to play. My daughter tried to teach me years ago, I got some of it, but don't think I would learn very quickly. I wish I did.
Jim360,
Chess Champion Garry Kasparov was consultant on the programme.
I was taught young as well. My uncle taught me, he must have been really bored looking after us.

My son was taught the basics and practised on the internet. He's a bit obsessive.

I have an amazing chess table and chairs.
Question Author
Very impressive, ummmm. I wish I could play...
I find it really boring tbh.

Look on the internet. You can play against a robot.

This is why I get annoyed when people slate our youngsters for always being on their phones. They don't know what they are looking at. My son was learning to play chess.

He's now teaching himself French :-)
Question Author
Yes, it is annoying. Your son is putting his phone to good use. I hope he does well in life.
patsy, I've been using a few sites this one is good
lichess.org - you can click an option and play someone else in the word more or less instantly. It also has some very good tutorial. Chess is one of those games that is very simple to learn the moves etc but takes a lot more time to progress to any sort of standard.
Click on learn, then chess basics for tutorial
Question Author
Thanks, TTT. Will have a look later.
