Tigger, there was a reference to homozygosity, if I heard right, having two identical forms of a gene, one inherited from each parent.

I've never heard of that word, Eve. How would that be worse or significant though?

I'm sure someone more sciencey than me can explain it better and in more detail but one thing it could indicate is "inbreeding". So maybe suggesting there could have been some kind of inappropriate relationship which lead to Jo's birth. Maybe why her father wasn't named on her police file, well, though I doubt she'd be in the police if she was, but it could mean she didn't know who he was due to the circumstances of her birth.
