It has annoyed for many years how The BBC will warn ahead of various news items that the next report contains flashing images but cannot do the same for Strictly Come Dancing. I spend more and more time looking away from the screen these days to avoid the chronic lighting in SCD. I reckon someone, somewhere has probably had an epileptic episode from watching the programme.

Given that and Tess Daly I think I will probably pull the plug on the whole debacle.

I stopped watching it 2-3 years ago for exactly that reason Choux. Looks as if it was the right decision as it sounds as if it's got worse.

Is it simply that you would expect flashing images throughout Strictly but not necessarily in news items?
Question Author
No, I don't expect the very strong flashing images throughout. When the programme first appeared it was never this bad.
I sometimes wonder how the judges can judge the dance with the distraction of all the disco like lighting going on - I undestand (I think ) where you are coming from choux, there are flashing lights when not needed, right now I see Westlife are on with a ballad and it has lights flashing needlessly

You get my point, ducksie. Thank you :)
I guessed that was it, as I feel the same with Strictly, I look away most times because of the lighting

Turn all the lights off in the room, look away from the screen and one could think one was at a fireworks display :(
don't tell us, tell them, if you actually want something done about it.

Or if you want to go public straightaway, write to the Radio Times

Exactly - the costumes are kind of like mini mirrors too so those lights bounce off it, it all plays havoc with how you view the program - I complain (to myself ) every week about it, but I still watch it for light entertainment not the lighting entertainment
Question Author
jno, are you telling me not to post my thoughts on here?
Does the continuity announcer not announce it before the show begins?
Mozz, the continuity announcer says it before the news but not before strictly
It was announced before movie week I didn't notice this week.
no, post in every chatroom in the land if you want, choux, I'm just suggesting how you might do something about it if you want it fixed.

rowan, that is because it wasn't there this week, I replayed the opening to make sure ;)
Question Author
lb, I think I too have had enough of SCD now :)
I don't watch so much...I listen.
Seriously though, I don't really notice. I might now.
If they don't warn you, it's because they think there's virtually no chance it would trigger your epilepsy ...
As you've experienced this problem a few times, you shouldn't need a warning. Just stop watching it.
I think warnings on news programmes about flashing images are to do with lots of paparazzi taking photos all at once, possibly trigging epileptic fits. There are not the same kind of lights in Strictly.
