What Is So Great About Joan Collins?
30 Answers
I’ve never understood the appeal of Joan Collins, why she’s so famous, and why she deserved a Damehood. Last night’s BBC docu only confirmed for me she’s not a great actress and has never been in anything great - in fact she’s been in a lot of what I’d consider trash - though I appreciate plenty of people loved Dynasty. I personally have never thought her physically particularly attractive. She’s on her fifth marriage, which I’m not sure is something to be proud of. Okay, so she can come up with the occasional witticism, but that doesn’t make her worthy of reverence in my book. So I’ll be interested to now see cases for the defence

i have never thought of her as beautiful or talented in any way. I don't know how she got so far up the ladder of fame...

She has obviously been a very busy socialite as was mentioned recently by Biggins on tv. She got him a gem of an invite to a dinner party where he sat at the table with Frank Sinatra. Joan has never professed to be a great actress and has readily admitted her worst film was The Fly.
Decades ago she said that every woman should devise a make-up and hair routine that they could do for themselves in about 15 minutes. Funny the things one can remember :)
If her name can help to raise money for charities good luck to her.

She has been in film and tv since 1951; she has been tabloid fodder for decades with much speculation about her marriages and divorces, plastic surgery, wigs...
It is this media attention that has made her so useful for charity work.
She has sponsored foster children in India for over 35 years without cheap publicity shots of her with the children; actively campaigned for breast cancer awareness; been very involved with the Shooting Stars Children's Hospice and other charities. She is not just a name on the letterhead for these charities like some 'patrons'.
I don't rate her as an actress, never saw Dynasty but she did make me laugh in those adverts with Leonard Rossiter. She can poke fun at herself and seems to be a genuinely good egg.
I think Joan deserves her Damehood.

She's not a good actress particularly, but I really like her character and sense of fun. A real personality and I think she was very beautiful. She's used her fame to help charities, and has has been said, she has never sought publicity for her charitable work. And she was great in that film, as was Pauline Collins. The casting was great. Lovely film.
