For example, ITV's income took a massive hit when loads of new Freeview and Sky channels started taking away their advertising revenue. They, and their rivals, lost even more advertising revenue when companies realised that it's a hell of a lot cheaper to advertise online than it is on the box.
Meanwhile, the BBC has had its revenue cut in real terms by the Government, which first of all ceased paying for BBC World Service (thus creating an additional burden for licence payers) and then froze the licence fee. Major costume dramas, for example, cost about a million pounds an hour to make, so Aunty Beeb isn't going to making a vast number of those in future.
If you're looking for programme recommendations though, it would help people here to know
(a) what type of programmes you enjoy ; and
(b) which platforms you've got access to. (For example, it won't help you if someone recommends a series on Sky if you've only got Freeview).
However, if you've got BBC iPlayer, I suggest looking beyond the usual channels. In particular, I've grown extremely fond of BBC Alba for its quality programming. (Don't let the predominance of Gaelic put you off! Everything is subtitled in English).
For example, there's traditional music

>>> too many futile game shows
I agree, although The Remotely Amusing Gameshow (on BBC Scotland) might be worth a look for its pure silliness :-)

Buenchico, you forgot to mention that the government passed the financial burden of free tv licences for the over 75s to the Beeb despite the Tory's promises to preserve it. 18% of the BBC budget gone, which is why the BBC had to scrap it except for those on pension credit.
I wonder how itv would fare if the BBC started showing adverts on their main channels. I believe the other channels want the BBC to remain licence funded

Buenchico says that no one can afford to make decent telly these days....with major costume dramas costing about a million pounds an hour to make.
The BBC burns through around 10 million pounds of tax payer money/day; to my mind they should be able to put aside a couple of days worth of spending to make some decent telly.
