There's a programme starting shortly about the lovely summer of 1976 on Ch 5 if anyone's interested. There have been a few progs about mega cold winters so it's good to see one about a hot summer. I`m recording it for posterity.
Ah yes, that was back in the days when politicians really got things moving. It only took Denis Howell three days in the job as Minister for Drought before he got it to rain ;-)
As far as I remember, our heatwave started in the Whitsun school holidays. I might be wrong, it was a long time ago. In Devon the water was cut off and stand pipes were installed. Luckily, our village was a bit outlaying and by the time the water company got around to us, the drought had just ended which was good timing.
My 1st child was born Nov. '75. I'm here to tell you that the summer of '75 was pretty hot as well! Combination of pregnancy and heat brought my 1st ever migraine. :(
She was, as you've worked out, small but becoming active that summer. It was a nightmare to keep her cool and quite spoiled my enjoyment of the heat - which I could manage then. Loved it all. :)
I loved it though it was more humid than sunny. 1975 was better in terms of sun. I could do with some of the 'heatwave' they keep banging on about on the weather. No sun again today til 4.00 p.m. feeling a bit shortchanged. I just want to sit out and read my book.
Remember it well - the long hot Summer of '76 - first trip to Vancouver in the Fall and, referring to post by Itsme7, that's when my heart started beating faster seeing someone I hadn't seen for 6 years.
Memories -The tar on the roads melted every day and we left the curtains drawn all day. Everything dried up. Went swimming in the North Sea one hot evening wearing a sundress to cool down before driving back to home in Hertfordshire. Didn't bother to dry off first. When the first rain came everyone ran out of their houses down our road and ran around in it. Went to Greece in September and everything was green in contrast to our baked brown countryside!! Horrible hot summer!!!
