There are loads that I find myself saying to the tv screen ‘I’ve no idea how they ever became successful or even got offered any parts!’, but yesterday I found myself walking in lounge and an episode of Birds of a Feather was on. And there was Linda Robson. Quite how she ever got offered parts is beyond me - she only seems to play one role, and as for her voice……. Yes I know she has an East End accent, but she honestly sounds as though she has a peg on her nose….. I had to turn over as I couldn’t stand listening to it. Yes I know that's my opinion only and loads probably think she’s a great actress, but who can’t you stand to watch, or are amazed that they even became successful??

Ken - // Mind you, there are some who would level the same criticism at 'Squint' Eastwood - always plays the same type of role. He's one of my favourite actors:-) //

Then they'd be guilty of watching only Mr Eastwood's westerns - his 'Dirty Harry' character is utterly different from his 'Man With No Name', and he has a raft of other roles that are similarly dissimilar from each other.
There are a number of actors who are seriously one-dimensional, and most of the main culprits have been named.

Top of my list is Sean Connery, who has managed to play a Russian submarine captain with a Scots accent, and an Irish cop with a Acots accent, and he won an Oscar for that!!!

I agree with the criticism of Michael Caine, with the exception of his part in 'Harry Brown' which was peerless acting.

For me, James Nesbit is another culprit, as is Jim Carey,Pauline Quirke, any actor / actress in any soap on any channel, and so on ...
all true, Ken - but he didn't go to war himself, and John Ford (who'd been in the war making documentaries) used to make him cry by taunting him with it.

He apparently learnt how to walk and talk like a cowboy from Wyatt Earp, whom he knew.

So true about Sean Connery lol!

Judy Dench. She plays the same character type in every film.
Judi Dench? Quite a difference between Shakespeare in Love and Cats...
if you want to throw a singer in there - put Dolly Parton in. Squeaky wee voice - oh yes I know a very very kind lady. But we're talking about the acting profession - oh I forgot - she was in Nine to Five.

237 - although I like Judy Dench but you are right - she even plays the same part in that advertisement (I think) about James bond. Some people can't get away from themselves. LOL

I'm not sure a comparison with singers actually works in this context.

Singers are popular because they sound the same each time, they are not required to sound different, in fact their fans would be unhappy if they did.

You can like or dislike a voice - as you clearly do - but Ms Parton is consistent in her delivery, as is every other major recording artist, which is what makes them popular in the first place.
Sean Connery gave a stunning performance in Untouchables. His accent didn't matter.
Another vote here for John Wayne. Couldn't act .
Sorry, but will have to give John Wayne The Green Berets.
I agree, Paigntonian. It's not as though the film was some sort of documentary, or historically accurate; it's an entertainment, and he's entertaining.
Paigntonian - // Sean Connery gave a stunning performance in Untouchables. His accent didn't matter. //

We must agree to differ.

His performance was the same as it always was in every film he ever did, and since he was playing an Irish cop, his accent absolutely mattered!!
Got to add Nicholas Lyndhurst and Amanda Redman.
And Amanda Burton, whose acting skills seem to be an ability to move her eyes in the same direction at the same time.
Most of the cast of EastEnders.
Apparently the new Chancellor is among those who going to ask him to go. Bizarre. Why take the job?
Hasn't David Jason been awful since Only Fools? Frost is terrible, as was his efforts in Darling Buds.
