University Challenge - Opening Credits
30 Answers
Can anyone put a name to the figure who drifts across the screen in one of the little bubbles on the opening credits of University Challenge? I can recall seeing him on news reports back in either the late 60s, 70s or possibly 80s, almost always wearing that same peculiar item of headgear. He was either a political dissident (in an Asian country, I'm sure) or a deposed leader, possibly sent into exile. Either way, he was quite a 'newsworthy' figure back in the day, but I can't for the life of me bring his name to mind. I've tried contacting the BBC and the University Challenge production company, but no joy!

This person was definitely male and was in the news some years before Aung San Suu Kyi, who came to prominence in 1988 when she returned to Burma (as it was then). The image used on University Challenge is the 'stock' library footage which I can recall from the time, and although the headgear is similar, it's not her. If you watch the programme tomorrow evening, you'll see that the image is on screen for a frustratingly brief time!
The YouTube vids are a bit "low def", I captured the image from the iPlayer version here:

Can be paused and studied at leisure, no need to watch it live tomorrow.
