At last!!!
I have hated this tawdry horror show for decades.
It's nasty, cheap television, appealing to the very lowest common instincts in humanity. the amusement in other people hurting or humiliating themselves, often both at the same time.
What I always found utterly dreadful, was the constant use of film of children hurting themselves as they fell, or hurt themselves in some way or other.
The clip was always the same - a small child would come into a situation where something simple like the lack of spatial awareness little ones have, would cause them to fall and obviously hurt themselves.
As any parent of a small child knows, there is that two or three second gap between the impact, and the reaction, while the child tries to comprehend what has happened, while simultaneously gathering the breath they have lost in shock, to cry or scream in pain or fright, often both.
During that small gap, any unfeeling and frankly brain dead adults within hearing distance, would start to laugh, and of course, just before the child's cry / scream came, the clip would fade.
It was utterly horrible that someone would not only witness something like that, and instead of dropping their camera and rushing to help the child, would continue to film, and then think it amusing to gain a £500 wedge by sending their film of a child they are related to, or know, to a television company, to play it for the entertainment of the great unwashed on Saturday teatime television.
It was always inexcusable, and ITV's use of such horrible images because they represent cheap and profitable television, was never an excuse in my view.
I hope it is never resurrected, and I applaud the decision to remove this stain on human nature in the name of 'fun' from our culture, hopefully for ever.
