what I just don't get is, how is it even possible? Surely they use prop guns that don't fire anyway.

One point made is that a prop gun is just a gun used as a prop - it may still be a real one.
The guns were real guns, not a prop in any sense.
Or mayne I should say 'the gun was a real gun......'
What folk need to understand is that this took place in USA where guns are freely available to the whole population (enshrined in the Constitution), so obviously that includes film sets. As a result "prop" guns there are the real thing, just like "prop" teapots for example would be the real thing in the UK.
That's what I was thinking when that story first broke. Having live firearms on a busy movie set seems grossly irresponsible (even though it may be commonplace). More importantly, will this accident bring about change within the industry? Let's hope so.
