We went there under that scheme and a few parts I remembered including the bit about no blacks as this was very true back then. We didn't go until the 60s so not quite so primitive and we even had inside toilets.

Yes we did. Mother didn't like it over there and couldn't get on with the heat and was homesick so we came back to where she was happy. The rest of us liked it there though.

I have cousin who went in the early 70’s. Now there are three generations living there. Apparently tough at first, but never came back.
A friend of my mother’s went to Canada with her family, became homesick, so her husband let her come home for a visit. Early 70’s. She went back when she realised it was better there. Wondered why she missed Britain.

I only know three families that went to Oz - eventually they all returned. One in particular told me that his wife was so homesick she had a full on mental breakdown. Sectioned, treated and basically returned unopened.

My sister went as a £10 pom with her new husband, they have been there 54 years. Back home for a couple of holidays but never to stay.

I had the idea of going in my adventurous young days in the 60s. I spent quite a long holiday out there staying with my Aunt 24 years ago and was glad I hadn't gone out there to live.

My cousin lived between UK and Oz for years. Had homes in both. Eventually come back here to stay. Prefers the UK way of life and to be with her daughter and family. Her daughter was born in Oz and emigrated to here.

Def not a cheap holiday. As the programme showed, you had to give up your passport for 2 years on arrival.
