Simon Templer is the charater better known as 'The Saint' of the TV series and film. From the film it suggests that he took this name as a alias inspired by his time in an orphanage in his youth. All the alias' in the film are Saints. hope this help, Hamish

To add to Hamish's answer I think we should also credit Leslie Charteris, the author of the books and original creator of Simon Templar (note spelling - sorry to be Spellmaster-like). And, to add to bobbobley's answer, played by Val Kilmer in the terrible film from 1997.
Also immortalised on the flip side of Splodgenessabounds' Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps Please which itself lent its name to a TV series some two decades later.
He was also played by Ian Ogilvy in "Return of the Saint" in the 70's.
In think his name always was Simon Templar - but when he was looking for a nickname as a way of staying undercover he chose his initials, as they could mean "saint" thus providing a suitably ironic double entendre. In fact i'm sure this is the right answer and that everybody else is wrong. I hope you can all deal with that.
