The first episode of this four-part series will air on Monday 9 October on BBC One.   When news of this account of his life was first published I said I wouldn't watch but I think I will - if I can stand it.  How about you?

I'll watch it to see how Coogan plays it.

naomi: //Khandro, I'm currently watching 'The Long Shadow' - the story of the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper - which is excellent.  And I've just finished watching Love and Death, a dramatised account of the story behind a killing in the US - also excellent.  You may as well ask 'why watch anything?'//

I think the next in the pipe-line might be,                           'Rose West: reminiscences of Life With Fred.'

The you can really get out the popcorn. 🙄

I'm currently watching the 'Ripper' series, Naomi, and find it excellent viewing with a cast chock full of tv detectives/coppers.

I will give the Saville series a go, once all episodes are available.

If we all avoided programmes because of someone's political bias, we'd end up watching reality tv 24/7🙄

Ken, my answer was to Tilly who doesn't like Steve Coogan.  I am not watching it because I have no more interest in Jimmy Saville.  I enjoyed Philomena. I can't stand Eddie Izzard, but I watch him as an actor because he's excellent.  Same goes for other actors.

I'm glued to it, Ken.  Really well done.

Emma Thompson for example ;0)

Can't stand Emma T Lottie.  She who wags her finger at the public and tells them which way they should be voting.

I don't like Coogan either but he was good in Philomena.

Neither can I.

No.

I shan't watch it.  I depise Savile (my ex-Mrs had to put up with his shenanigans) & am not interested in true-life dramatisations as a rule.

I do think Coogan will be excellent in the role & I like him generally, but not as Alan Partridge, one of the worst "comedy" creations ever.  Imo, of course.

I doubt they will include the morgue scenes where he practised necrophilia.

That  made me shudder Zacs.

//I doubt they will include the morgue scenes where he practised necrophilia. //

In the review I read, it does, but not too graphically

I'll see how it goes. I really like Steve Coogan, so I'll try it. If it's too upsetting I'll leave it.

No? I won't be watching.
When the whole seedy debacle unfolded a few years ago, it brought back memories for me that I'd rather remain buried.

I didn't mean to put a question mark there.

I'm with Vulcan on this -  he deserves nothing more than to be forgotten about.

I gather from reports that the BBC (whom I normally support strongly) have shot themselves in the foot in that this programme sanitises or skates over their role in turning a blind eye - if this is the case it will be viciously exploited by their usual opponents.  Let me know, because I won't be watching it.

Four of his victims are interviewed as part of it. There is scene in the morgue Zacs Master. There was  a double page spread in the paper last week, another this week. And two half pages in the tv review this week. Don't think I will watch it haven't decided. I couldn't stand him when I was growing up.

am not interested in true-life dramatisations as a rule.

well as the thread confirms/demonstrates, it isnt real-life is it? It is someone's take on it, and here the suggestion is that the channel showing it is letting itself off lightly

The long shadow - it depends if you think that it all went swimmingly or that there was over-emphasis on the recordings which derailed the investigation ( confirmation bias). The Byford report ( look-back review done soon after) is in the main toe-curling.

Double page spread in the Times. If it is so obvious now, why wasnt it so obvious then?
