Mike Yarwood Tribute Tonight

Following his recent passing, much was made of the 'genius' of Mike Yarwood, and his record-breaking viewing figures.

I suspect this tribute will show that his shows have not aged well at all.

Personally, I never understood the appeal at the time - even though I was a lot younger and more easily impressed then.

i thought his impressions were franky not that impressive at all, and I always cringed at the final part when he would announce "And this is me!" as though the scales would fall from our eyes and we would suddenly realise that all those pieces with him gurning in bad costumes and make-up were not actually the real figures, but MY in disguise!

And to add to our bafflement at his range of talents, he would then sing a song really really badly, and the show would end.

As I say, his appeal was a mystery to me then, and I wonder if any other viewers of that time were similarly disimpressed?

I always enjoyed watching his shows and talent. Strangely when ever I think of Mike Yarwood I can only recall the trademark Pipe and Gannex. No other impersonations. May be I will catch up and jog my memory but the rugby beckons

I suppose to a younger generation it did appear cringeworthy along with a load of other comics and acts in those days.He was fairly topical. Unlike the Peter Kay's of these days they didn't need to yell and holler with all the effing and blinding to go with it so I suppose to some he was quite tame and genteel with the audience.

I can't do what Matt Hancock did, but I wouldn't say that qualifies him as talented!!!

Yarwood's best impression was definitely Harold Wilson, he actually managed to look a bit like him.

His targets were mostly politicians so the younger audience now wouldn't know what it was about really.

This is why he now seems dated .

I too thought he was a bit overrated. In a WMC environment with a few beers he was probably better.

I do love a good impressionist - Jon Culshaw and Rory Bremner in particular. I vaguely remember Mike Yarwood from my distant childhood, so will watch the programme to see how he compares.

I thought his take offs were rather good. Both voice and facial expressions. The wardrobe/makeup folk did well to, to get him looking the part.

 

I suspect those who recall who he was taking off will enjoy seeing it again, younger folk who didn't know the originals may be less keen.
