Best Gritty Television Series Ever

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.If I'm doing a series I tend to prefer Brit stuff, as the American stuff (and I'm sure it's great) tends to have loads of episodes over loads of series, and I haven't got the patience to stay with it.
So for me it has to be Peaky Blinders which I thought was TV gold. I loved it.
Everybody in it was superb, but I felt Tom Hardy was simply brilliant, and it was a shame he wasn't in it more.
Agree with almost all of those already mentioned, but as a 'one-off' series, i have to say The Shadow Line is just about the best i've seen. Slick script from Hugo Blick, great storylone and some superb acting from the likes of Rafe Spall, Christopher Eccleston, Stephen Rea (the most unlikely hit man you're ever likely to come across), Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lesley Sharp. Very gritty, imho. The only box-set CD i have ever bought.
