old TV series shown in australia. I think in the late 60's. About two male friends - and one dies and is a ghost and helps his other friend solve crimes.

Yep it is. But more recently they bought the series out again with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer.

I don't know if you can get ITV4 ,But if you can this is shown on monday's at 7pm.

It's actually quite good, as was the Reeves & Mortimer remake (written by Charlie Higson). Worth spending a few Australian Dollars if it's out on DVD over there.
