The plot fell down on a technicality which was due to sloppy research.

Streptomycin was not isolated until 1947. ".....Originally isolated by Selman A. Waksman and Albert Schatz in 1947, streptomycin is effective against tubercle bacilli and is a mainstay of tuberculosis therapy....."

Selman Waksman had discovered the mycobactesium tuberculosis died when added to certain soil types in 1932.
In 1943, he and Albert Shutz tested hundreds of soil organisms for antibacterial activity. After three months they isolated an organism with antibacterial properties from a chicken. This was Streptomycin.
I suppose the programme was concerned with the experimental nature of the drug rather than by its use by the Medical Research Council for the treatment of tuberculosis in 1947.
The most important aspect for me was the survival of the beautiful, Sam. (Honeysuckle Weeks). Yippee!!

It certainly wouldn't have been available in the rubber capped bottle in 1942 or 43 that's for sure.

Penicillin was discovered years before it could be effectively used. However, I too am glad that Sam survies to bewitch us all another day.

I just think with all the resources of the internet, Anthony H could have done better. 3/10 for effort.
