Does anybody remember the clangers? Michael Bentine did the voices and they used to visit the soup dragon ,they didn't speak but whistled all the time the sad thing is I could understand it all

You are 100% right about michael bentine,put it down to my age

The reason you could understand the dialogue is because Oliver Postgate and Steven Sylvester provided the "voices" from a script. So they inflected the words into the whistles. Oliver then translated most of that dialogue in his narration.

by the way, in case you didn't know, both series of "Clangers" are available on DVD and are now quite cheap ( about �4.99 each ).

Still no sign of "Vote for Froglet" though...

Re: understanding the Clangers, I saw an interview with Oliver Postgate on one of those nostalgia shows. He said they tried to sell the Clangers to German TV. After the screening the Germans were very keen to buy the series and they were amazed that the Clangers spoke German!! So I suppose it works in most languages.
